Radon testing in Orland Park

Three ways to get your number. One of them is free.

You get an honest number — the kit or the detector does the measuring, not the person who'd sell you the fix. Here's how to get it.

Start here

The free kit from Cook County

Cook County Public Health mails a radon test kit, free, to any home in suburban Cook County. Orland Park and Orland Hills are both on the county's city list. You fill out a short form, the kit comes in the mail, you set it out for a few days and mail it back. The lab result comes to you. One corner of Orland Park, near 183rd Place and 116th Avenue, sits in Will County — if your tax bill says Will, use the Will County kit below instead.

Cost
Free, by mail. Whether the lab fee is included isn't stated on the county page.

Checked October 5, 2026 Chicago residents are routed to the American Lung Association store instead ($13 short-term, $38 long-term). If the county pauses the program: Will County sells kits for $8 at its Joliet, Bolingbrook and Monee offices — pickup, and the $8 covers the lab and return postage — or order a mail-in kit from a state-listed lab. Air Chek's 3–7 day kit is $12.95 including analysis and shipping; RSSI's long-term kit is $32.

If you want to keep watching

A radon detector for your home

A kit gives you one number for one week. Radon moves with the seasons, with the furnace running, with the windows shut. A detector sits on the shelf and shows you the long-term average — and after a mitigation system goes in, it's how you keep watching.

Affiliate disclosure: We earn a small commission when you buy through our link or code. It costs you nothing extra — the code ARS10-10OFFtakes 10% off. We recommend these because they are the detectors in our own customers' homes.

What your number means

ResultWhat it means
Under 2.0 pCi/LLow. Retest every couple of years, or after a remodel or a new furnace.
2.0 – 3.9 pCi/LEPA says consider fixing it. Worth a second test, and a detector earns its keep here.
4.0 pCi/L and upEPA's action level. Fix it. That is the work we do, and the result is guaranteed in writing before we start.

Buying or selling? That transaction usually wants a test by a licensed measurement professional, not a kit or a detector. Check with your agent or attorney first.

When it comes back high

Text Bill the number

Send the result and your street. He'll tell you what it means and what fixing it would take — free, and he doesn't need to come out to answer that. If it does need a system, he'll come take a look, no trip charge, and give you the price before anything gets scheduled.

We've put systems in 20 Orland Park homes so far this year.

Orland Park homes

Split-levels and three-step ranches with a crawlspace under part of the home. Brick fronts where nobody wants a pipe. Finished basements that decide where the system has to go. 20 systems in Orland Park this year, and the layout is different in every one.

  • A full new system here runs $2,000 to $2,500 for most homes. Bill looks first, then gives you the number.
  • Already have a radon pipe in the utility room with no fan on it? Many homes built since 2013 do. Activation starts at $900.
  • The five-year fan warranty covers the visit, the labor and the fan.

After the fix

Illinois has you retest once the system has run for at least 24 hours and within 30 days of installation, with the fan running the whole time. A kit does that job, and the free county kit works for it too. Send us a copy so your file is complete.

If a qualifying test during the warranty period shows radon above 3.9 pCi/L, we come back, do the additional mitigation work at no charge to you, and pay for the professional retest afterward. That guarantee is written into the proposal you accept before we start.

And if you bought a detector, you keep watching for free. Leave it where it was. The official retest is one week; the detector is every week after that — through next winter, after the next remodel, for as long as you own the home.
