What is Radon?
According to the American Lung Association, Radon is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that causes lung cancer. Radon can build up to dangerous levels inside homes, schools and other buildings. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking.
Radon gas occurs naturally. It forms when uranium breaks down to radium, which in turn breaks down to form radon. As radon decays, it releases radioactive byproducts that are inhaled and can cause lung cancer. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States.
Where Does Radon Come From?
According to the American Lung Association, Radon is emitted from the ground and enters a home through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundations and other openings. Because radon comes from rock and soil, it can be found anywhere. Exposure to limited concentrations, like those found outdoors, is impossible to avoid. However, when radon gets trapped indoors, it may build up to dangerous concentrations. The most important source of radon gas indoors is the soil and rock surrounding the building. By sealing your home to keep radon from getting through cracks and openings, you can significantly reduce your home's radon levels. You may need to install a separate radon ventilation system in your home to remove high levels.
Less frequently, radon may enter buildings from radon-contaminated drinking water used in bathroom showers and sprays, though this occurs only when the water comes from a private well. More recently, concerns have been raised about the radon released indoors from granite counter tops or tiles. However, these sources are rarely a problem by themselves.

"Bill and Colleen were an absolute breeze to work with. I had a bit of a crisis as we were trying to get clear to close on our new home and I needed an estimate on very short notice. Not only did Bill answer the phone and my questions right away, but he was able to come out the next day and get me a very fair, written estimate for the work. Scheduling the installation was also easy and Bill and his helper were there on time and got done in about 4-5 hrs. They were very respectful, very friendly and exceptionally clean. I only wish I could hire him for some other projects around the house!"
"American Radon systems installed a mitigation system in my home this past weekend 11/5. The owner was the most pleasant that I have ever worked with in all my years as a homeowner. He new the business was very professional and made sure to take care of the surrounding area's of work with protection for carpeting, floors etc. Installed the system in allotted time and cleaned up all work after. I thought it was going to be installed in a different area which would have been an inconvenience but he installed in another area that made the job more accessible and not so hard on the eyes. I would refer American Radon to any homeowner or sell that needs a radon mitigation system installed."
"I wish every company was as easy and pleasant to work with. From beginning to end of the project the costumer service was excellent, job done professionally with quality and care. Would definitely use again!!"
"Great customer service - handled the job the very next day."
"Bill and his crew showed up on time, in fact beat me to the property, and immediately got to work. At the end he walked me thru the process to make sure I understood what to look for, the flow meter that was installed"
"We had a bad experience with another company that left us a little wary of anyone else. Bill was amazing. He came in and gave us a good estimate. Then he worked all day to make sure the system was put in well and looked great. He went above and beyond to get our system put in. Also, we have two dogs that were going nuts because he was there, he took the time to come say hi to them to get them to relax. He really was fantastic. Hopefully I won't need abatement in the future but if I do, he will be the only call I make."
