How to Choose a Radon Mitigation Company in Illinois
A radon quote is not only a price for pipe and a fan. The contractor is deciding how each foundation area will be covered, where the pipe and fan will go, what the finished system will look and sound like, what happens if the fan fails, and who will answer the phone later. These are the questions that help a homeowner compare companies without relying on a sales pitch.

1. Verify the active Illinois mitigation license
Illinois licenses measurement and mitigation separately. Confirm the company holds an active Illinois radon mitigation license and that the license number can be verified through official Illinois resources.
2. Ask who evaluates the home and who performs the installation
Find out whether an experienced person studies the foundation and finished spaces before the quote, and who actually installs the system. Clear roles help you understand accountability.
3. Confirm how every foundation section will be covered
Basements, attached crawl spaces, slabs, and multi-section foundations may need separate suction areas. The design decision is how those areas are handled, not whether part of the home can be ignored.
4. Ask where the pipe, fan and discharge will be located
Routing affects living space, exterior appearance, sound, and service access. Ask for the planned route before work starts.
5. Discuss finished-space appearance and noise before installation
In finished basements and higher-detail homes, paint color, fan placement, sound, and street view may matter. Those choices are easier before installation than after.
6. Get the scope and price in writing
A clear written proposal should explain what is included, what the system path is, and what the price covers before work begins.
7. Ask exactly what the fan warranty includes
Ask whether warranty language covers only a manufacturer part or the full replacement visit when a fan fails.
8. Ask whether service visits and labor are included under warranty
A strong warranty is easy to understand: if a fan the company installed fails during the covered period, does the homeowner pay for the visit, labor, or replacement fan?
9. Ask whether the company services systems installed by others
Many homeowners inherit a system. A useful company can inspect, repair, replace a fan, activate passive piping, or relocate routing without requiring a full rebuild by default.
10. Ask about post-installation testing guidance
A mitigation company should explain how to confirm results after installation and when retesting is useful. Testing may be referred to licensed measurement professionals.
11. Look for real project photos and public reviews
Prefer specific project photos, clear routing examples, and third-party reviews over vague claims. Project details should match real work, not stock imagery.
12. Make sure the company will still answer after installation
Ask who picks up the phone later if the fan changes sound, the manometer looks different, or a remodel requires a route change.
