Why this guide matters locally

A documented July 2026 smoke episode

On July 16, 2026, the National Weather Service Chicago office reported that smoke from fires in Ontario and northern Minnesota had descended into northern Illinois, producing unhealthy to hazardous conditions in parts of the region. Smoke conditions are temporary and can shift hour by hour, so this page does not publish a frozen “current AQI.” Use AirNow.gov for the live official reading.

What the AQI actually means

The U.S. Air Quality Index is EPA's color-coded way to communicate outdoor air pollution and short-term health concern. The higher the number, the greater the concern. During wildfire episodes, fine particle pollution (PM2.5) is often the pollutant driving the AQI.

AQI can also be driven by ozone or another regulated pollutant. When you check AirNow, look at both the number and the “primary pollutant” instead of assuming every orange or red day is wildfire smoke.

Practical steps from EPA and CDC

Check, then adjust

  • Check AirNow's current NowCast and forecast; smoke can change faster than a daily forecast.
  • When guidance calls for it, shorten or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity.
  • Pay particular attention if someone is a child, older adult, pregnant, or has heart or lung disease.
  • Follow a clinician's existing plan and seek medical help for severe or concerning symptoms.

Make indoor air cleaner

  • Keep windows and doors closed while outdoor smoke is high, as long as indoor heat is not becoming dangerous.
  • Set central air to recirculate and consider a MERV 13 filter if the system can safely handle it.
  • Use a correctly sized portable air cleaner in the room where people spend the most time.
  • Avoid adding particles indoors through smoking, candles, aerosol sprays, or heavy frying.
  • Air the home out when outdoor conditions improve.
