Radon mitigation in Crest Hill
Crest Hill is Will County, so the cheap test is the $8 kit from the Will County Health Department, sold at the Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Monee offices with the lab and the report included. A reusable detector keeps reporting after the first number.
Text Bill the number and he’ll tell you what it means, free. High result? Bill comes out, looks at the foundation, whether it is a detached home, a townhome, or a building with several units, and gives you the price. Send the closing date with the address if there is one.
What licensed tests in Crest Hill show
Counts come from the IEMA feature layer behind the public radon map, read on October 14, 2026. The service text dates that extract to July 18, 2022. Each row had to be flagged valid and had to carry a number. Homes that already have a mitigation system can remain in the file, because that flag is too inconsistent to trust as a filter. A second test of the same address stays in the count. The public map page uses a stricter rule, one highest result per address, for measurement years 2003 to 2019. Our other town pages do leave out records with a mitigation system noted, so their county shares differ a little from the ones here.
For the city name Crest Hill, 211 of 463 valid tests were at 4.0 pCi/L or above. The share is 45.6 percent. Will County in the same layer is 38.6 percent, which is 16,091 elevated results out of 41,726 valid tests. ZIP 60403 is left out on purpose. That ZIP also covers Joliet. ZIP 60489 had no rows in this layer.
These are tests people chose to buy. They are background, not a forecast. The June 2024 EPA file places Will County in Zone 2. The zone is a county tag. Testing is still the only way to know the level in one home.
The ground under Crest Hill
Olivier Caron mapped the surficial geology of the Joliet quadrangle in 2017 for the Illinois State Geological Survey, with USGS STATEMAP support. The sheet lists Crest Hill among the communities on it. The quadrangle sits between the Rockdale Moraine and the Valparaiso Morainic System, about 35 miles from the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The ground on that sheet was built in the Wisconsin Episode, between about 29,000 and 14,700 years ago. Four moraines make up the Valparaiso system on the map explanation: Westmont, Wheaton, West Chicago, and Manhattan.
Silurian-age rock at the bedrock surface is light gray, fine-grained dolomite and limestone. The map says those rocks commonly exceed 250 feet in thickness, except where buried valleys have cut them down. The Joliet Formation is the named unit people mean when they talk about Joliet stone. USGS Geolex records the name from Joliet, Will County, for limestone and dolomite exposed in a Joliet quarry, and the Illinois stratigraphy handbook it cites gives that formation about 70 to 80 feet along the Des Plaines valley. That is one formation inside a much thicker Silurian stack. It is not a depth to rock under a Crest Hill slab, and it is not a reason to treat a Crest Hill lot as a quarry floor.
The till is not one blanket either. The Yorkville Member of the Lemont Formation is a gray, fine diamicton, typically about 45 feet thick and as much as 70. The map finds it at the surface in the western part of the quadrangle, west of the Des Plaines River, where it forms the Rockdale Moraine. East of the river, the Haeger Member is the uppermost diamicton along a thin band between Joliet and Lockport. Crest Hill is on the quadrangle. A single lot can fall on either side of that river story, or on a detail the 1:24,000 sheet does not resolve.
Radon is a noble gas with a short life. Uranium-238 in ordinary soil and rock decays to radium-226, and radium-226 decays to radon-222. The EPA technical guide for detached homes says radon-222 comes directly from that radium decay, and that soil gas is the main indoor source. The public fact sheet gives the half-life as 3.8 days, so the gas has a few days to move and then it is gone. In a heated Illinois winter the air indoors is lighter than the air outside. It leaves through the upper floors. The suction that creates at the lowest level is the stack effect. EPA reduction guidance describes it as soil gas drawn in at the foundation. Pores in glacial till are enough of a path. A quarry is not required.
The moraine, the river, and the Silurian rock are why the map looks busy. None of that is a reading for your home.
Crest Hill homes, from the Census
Census QuickFacts gives Crest Hill a July 1, 2025 population of 20,695, and an owner-occupied rate of 67.3 percent. The Crest Hill housing snapshot CMAP released in June 2026, using the 2020 to 2024 survey, lists a median year built of 1992, the same median it prints for Will County. Units built in 2010 or later are 2.6 percent. The 1990 to 2009 group is 50.7 percent.
Housing type is mixed, which is the practical point. Detached homes are 3,852 units, 46.5 percent. Attached single-family homes are 2,020 units, 24.4 percent. Buildings with 5 to 9 units are 5.9 percent, buildings with 10 to 19 units are 9.1 percent, and buildings with 20 or more units are 8.9 percent. American Radon Systems mitigates townhomes and attached homes in Crest Hill, and we mitigate multi-unit buildings there too. Send the address and Bill will price that foundation. A rental and a detached home are different jobs.
Will County writes the statewide rule this way. New one-family and two-family homes after June 1, 2013 include passive radon techniques. The Crest Hill share from 2010 onward is 2.6 percent, and that bin still mixes homes finished before the rule with homes finished after it. A photo of a pipe with no fan is the evidence that matters.

Crest Hill questions
Where do I get a radon kit in Crest Hill?
Buy the Will County $8 kit at Joliet, Bolingbrook, or Monee. Lab and report are included. Send that result to Bill and he will read it without a charge. Real estate measurement should come from an Illinois-licensed measurement professional.
What did the Crest Hill measurements in the IEMA file show?
The July 18, 2022 layer holds 211 valid Crest Hill tests at or above 4.0 pCi/L out of 463, or 45.6 percent. The Will County share in that file is 38.6 percent. ZIP 60403 stays out of this answer because it also includes Joliet. The file is not a prediction for one address.
Does Joliet limestone under the area mean my home will test high?
No. The Joliet quadrangle describes Silurian dolomite and limestone at the bedrock surface, commonly more than 250 feet thick except in buried valleys. The Joliet Formation is named for quarry exposures in Joliet. Radon comes from uranium in ordinary soil and rock and moves through pores in the till. The rock name does not set the pCi/L. A test does.
Do you mitigate townhomes and multi-unit homes in Crest Hill?
Yes. We mitigate townhomes in Crest Hill, along with attached homes and multi-unit buildings. The CMAP snapshot counts detached units at 46.5 percent and attached single-family homes at 24.4 percent. Larger buildings hold the rest. Send the address so Bill can price that foundation.
How soon can Crest Hill work be scheduled?
Send the closing date with the address. Bill will tell you the first open day. New-system work is usually on the calendar within a week or two, and most of the install itself is one visit after he looks. Fan replacement is usually within a day or two.
